Title
Awl
Description
English: Flint awl, trapezoid in plan and lozenge shaped in profile. On the dorsal side the distal end is retouched to a point and the proximal end spalled. The upper left margin has a cutting edge and the lower end is cortex. The right margin has a flaked edge. On the ventral side the distal end is retouched and the proximal end spalled. The surface is convex with an interrupted mesial ridge and a lateral ridge running across to the right margin which is abraded cortex. The left margin has lateral flake removal.

The flint has pale cream grey areas and a secondary cortex of dark cream with a dark yellow orange section. It also has a heat crazed surface.

Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 113, Fig. 45, No. 8 which is dated to the Mesolithic period.
