Diagram of 51 lb 8 oz 1/2 charge Cordite cartridge Mk I, for British BL 9.2 inch Mk IX & Mk X naval and coast defence guns.
The advantage of composite cartridges was originally believed to be that this enabled a larger charge to be fired, increasing muzzle velocity, without increasing chamber pressure. Ballistics were also believed to vary less with change of temperature. |
