Title
BODKIN
Description
English:

Two halves of an incomplete silver head-dress pin or bodkin of Post-Medieval date. The bodkin has been broken in two in recent times, probably due to the plough. The object is rectangular in cross-section and tapering widthways to a blunt point which terminates with a break. The terminal end of the object terminates in a recent break 0.50mm above the start of the longitudinal slot.

Below the slot each face of the object is decorated with two transverse grooves below which is a panel of incised cross-hatched decoration. Below the cross-hatching are two more transvers grooves and five vertical grooves project from the lower transverse groove. The central vertical groove is the longest with the groove either side terminating at three quarters of the length of the central groove and the outer two groves in turn terminate at one quarter of the length of the central groove. On one face the initials SD are engraved. There is no maker's mark present. File marks are visible on the sides of the bodkin.

A similar example which can be found on the PAS database is Darch, E (2011) NMS-032A66: A POST MEDIEVAL BODKIN Web page available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/439669.

The age and precious metal content of this item therefore qualify it as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

Dimensions: (two fragments together) 66.07mm in length, 4.43mm in width, 1.74mm thick, 4.6g.
