Title |
BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: Two incomplete copper alloy pieces, a Roman bow brooch probably T shape dating to the period c. AD 25 - 175. The first fragment comprises the head, with wings intact, and a section of the bow. It is 32.37mm in length and 35.68mm in width across the wings. The wings have two semi-circumferential incised lines at each outer edge and there is a central pin hole. The bow, which falls almost vertically from the head, is almost flat in cross-section, 2.47mm thick, and ends in a possibly recent break. At the break a copper-coloured granular effect can be seen. The bow is decorated with four longitudinal ridges, the two central ones continuing down the whole length of what can be seen, while the outer two end where the bow narrows 17.80mm below the top of the head. This shape and decoration is similar to Hattat 2007, p302 fig161 no 384. The item weighs 8.15g. It has a green patina. The second fragment, presented by the finder as part of the same item, is the foot of a brooch with an apparently complete catchplate, with pin curl. It is pierced with a circular hole. The catchplate is an integral extension of the bow, a little of which remains. The break appears to be consistant with the bow of the brooch above, in cross-section, patina, shape of break, cross-section of bow and copper colour granukar effect inside break. It is 21.73mm in length, 3.84mm in width (across the base of the bow). This would make the original length of the brooch 54mm. This fragment weighs 1.41g. This would make the whole brooch (which is missing its pin) 9.56g. |
