Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

A Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative Dolphin brooch dating to c. AD 75-175. It is almost complete only missing its spring and pin.

The wings are 21.0mm wide and cylindrical with an open reverse and perforated, slightly damaged, end caps. The bow projects from the front of the wings with a wide, bulbous front. From the back of this head, above the wings is a small perforated attatchment lug for the spring. The bow narrows down its length to a rounded foot. It has two slight collars where it meets the wings but is otherwise undecorated and is approximately D-shaped in cross section.

A thin catchplate survives projecting c.0.3mm from the back of the bow it is flat and plain.

The brooch is a medium green colour.

The brooch is 38.6mm long and 21.0mm wide.

Similar examples to this brooch illustrated by Hattat (2000: 298-9) Nos. 353 and 359 and Mackreth (2011: 49) No. 1899. Both of which suggest the form matches a Dolphin type brooch dating to  The latter two sources date this form to the end of the 1st century AD and the early 2nd century.
