Title |
BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: The foot and catchplate of a cast copper alloy Roman bow brooch. The bow, pin and head are missing. The bow is D-shaped in section with a flat back. It tapers in width from the break to the foot. At the top of the fragment is an expanded central rib that runs vertically down the bow. The foot of the brooch is flat and projects outwards from the front of the plate. The top of the foot is decorated by a single incised lines providing the foot with a raised collar. On the back of the bow is a catchplate. This catchplate is sub-trapezoidal in shape with an upper edge that curves to meet the back of the plate and a lower edge which project almost perpendicularly from the back of the foot. The outer edge appears to be slightly curved to provide a rest for the pin. The brooch now measures 26.5mm in length, 3.1mm in width, and weighs 1.86 grams . Without the bow it is difficult to be certain of the brooch type as most are defined by the form of the head, missing in this example. The foot knops often found on initial and developed T-shaped brooches which Bayley and Butcher (2004:167) date from the later 1st to mid 2nd century. Similar lower portions of bows are illustrated by Hattat (2000: 302, No.914) and Mackreth (2011: 67, Pl. 64). See SOM-05537C for a similar foot of a brooch. |
