Title
BUCKLE
Description
English: An incomplete Medieval or early Post Medieval cast copper alloy leather mount with suspension loops possibly dating from the 13th-16th centuries AD. The object consists of two identical rectangular plates cast in a sheet with two narrow rectangular strips in the centre, recessed from the perimeter edge of the rectangular plates and with an opening in the centre. The plate was then folded in half to create two identical overlapping faces with the two loops on one end. On the reverse surface, a large cylindrical lug protrudes from the edge opposite the loops; it is unclear whether this was cast onto the reverse of one of the rectangular faces and then forced through the other plate to secure the two together or whether the two halves were secured in another way with the lug simply attached to one face. Regardless, it seems that this object was probably connected to a leather strap or similar by means of the lug and perhaps by sandwiching material or leather in between the symmetrical plates as in a strap end or buckle plate. The suspension loops are similar to known examples for either holding a buckle frame or suspending a horse harness pendant or similar item of decoration. As such, it is suggested that this mount was probably used in one of these ways. The outer surface of the object has been gilded and it is possible that further decoration was originally intended. There is uncertain material still in between the plates, but this could be soil from its deposition. The object measures 28.3 mm long, 12.96 mm wide, 2.88 mm thick and weighs 6.3 grams.
