Title |
BULLA |
||
Description |
English: A medieval cast lead alloy papal bulla of Pope Urban VI (1378-1389). The "obverse" carries the name of the Pope in three lines, [UR]B/ANUS/PP VI. The first two letters have been spoiled by plough damage. The "reverse" has the usual portraits of the Saints Peter and Paul beneath the letters SPA SPE. There is a cross between the two portraits.
Unusually for a bulla there are symbols on the obverse. Two eagles displayed are in the space beneath the Pope's name. The eagle was the symbol of the Prigamo family, which the Pope was born into. See the internet , "C.J's Metal Detecting Pages, The Papal Bulla". Unfortunately only the top part of the eagles can be made out due to damage. But three eagles heads, facing to the left, can be clearly seen, one of which divides PP & VI. This eagle symbol is useful because it helps to confirm this bulla belongs to Urban VI (if , for instance the name or number were not clear). There is damage to the bulla giving a ragged effect to the top. A crack in the bottom edge can be seen where the cord would have exited. It has a light cream patina, mottled and discoloured in parts. The detail that can be seen is sharp. The bulla is oval, because of the damage. It measures 35.02mm x 38.93mm wide x 6.45mm thick (tapering towards the top). It weighs 46.56gm. There are six other bullae of this Pope on the database. SOM-B5A674, CORN-F4D163, LEIC-961952, DENO-896813, NMS-610D14, LANCUM-72E6E6. |
