Title |
back of bird mount showing rivets |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy figurative mount with integral suspension loops and separate rivets. The figurative parts of the mount are the two opposed lentoid elements, resembling two birds’ heads. These elements are pierced with rivet holes which still hold their rivets. The rivets are large and domed at the back of the mount, but small and flat on the face of the mount, making them appear as the birds’ eyes. The ‘heads’ join in the centre of the mount, where there is a central recessed ‘blind’ hole, above two opposing loops which are circular in section. Read (2001) illustrates two similar examples on page 43, Fig.26, Nos.368-9, which are dated to the 16th century.Egan (2002) illustrates a similar mount on page 204, Fig.128, No.1110, which is dated to the 15th century, but this example is made of a lead / high tin alloy. |
