Notes | 17th (Ruahine) Regiment hat badge, WW1 The 17th (Ruahine) Regiment was formed on 27 March 1914 as the 2nd Battalion of the 9th (Wellington East Coast) Regiment. The unit saw action on Gallipoli, Egypt and France. It was absorbed into the 9th (Hawke's Bay) Regiment in 1921, the whole becoming the Hawke's Bay Regiment in 1923. In 1941 the 2nd Battalion Hawke's Bay Regimen was mobilised as 1st Battalion 'Ruahine' Regimentt,as part of the 3rd New Zealand Division in the Pacific based in New Caledonia.
