Notes NZ Expeditionary Force hat badge of 31434 Rflm Frederick Charles Reynolds, NZRB, NZEF, WW1 Note- The NZ Expeditionary Force badge (1NZEF) was generally adopted by all reinforcements from the 34th onwards Rifleman FC Reynolds served with the NZ Rifle Brigade on the Western Front (France and Belgium), including 18 months working as a stretcher bearer before being discharged as physically unfit from gas poisoning and wounds received in action near Ypres in late 1917 (shrapnel in back). There were approximately nine bearers in his unit and he was the only one to return. Frederick Reynolds was working up north as a gum digger near Waihopo, Northland, at the outbreak of war, and after his discharge took up fencing contracts at Tolaga Bay, and then went back to the gumfields. His daughter says "he walked off with a money belt full of sovereigns" and bought a farm near Kaitaia.
