Title
Baldric ring
Description
English: A mid-late Iron Age baldric ring, which would have been used as part of the composite belt, used to hang a sword. The cast copper alloy ring is very badly worn and corroded. The whole ring appears to have been cast as one piece, or alternatively wrought.
The hoop is approximately 34.6mm in diameter. The ring has a projection (stud) originating from the front surface of the main hoop. The projection extends for about 8mm away from the main ring. The projection is slim at its base and then flattens out and becomes wider at its terminal (the terminal has a diameter of about 11.5mm).
The surface of the artefact is mid greyish-green in colour and is heavily pitted.
This stud may have fitted into holes in leather in much the same way as a modern belt is held together. The baldric ring would give the sword bearer a means of adjusting the length of the belt.

Four baldric rings have recently been found in West Sussex, the PAS record numbers are listed here:
SUSS-D82452
SUSS-4C9825
SUSS-4C8491
SUSS-913C68

The four baldric rings have all been donated to the British Museum by the finders and the landowners.
