| Description | Bampton Church (Saint Mary), Oxfordshire, 6 September 2018. Founded as an Anglo-Saxon Minster Church 1062 or possibly earlier in 10th Century of which a few parts of the wall survive in the present church which was constructed in 12th Century as a Norman cruciform church. In the 13th Century Early English north and south aisles were added, the tower heightened and spire erected (1270). Alterations were made in the 14th Century of Decorated style and a chapel north of the chancel added. In the 15th Century Perpendicular clerestories were added to the nave and both transepts, the aisles re-roofed and a south porch added. In 1702 a Georgian chapel was added south of the chancel. In 1868-70 the church was restored by Ewan Christian including the re-roofing of the nave and chancel. Pictured is the south and east elevations. |
