Notes Wings of the Former High Altar of the Church of Our Lady with Scenes from the Life of the Virgin. Painting on limewood. The high altar, donated by the Welser patrician family, was the last and largest pre-Reformation altarpiece in Nuremberg. The interior wings show scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary: Meeting at the Golden Gate, Birth, Presentation in the Temple and Presentation of Christ. The exterior is taken up by a monumental Lamentation of Christ. Hans von Kulmbach was long considered the painter. He had designed the related choir windows. However, the somewhat bold execution and the interest in architecture point to Beham as the artist.
