Summary[edit]

Description

Basic 8½" by 11" chart of ancient Hebrew and Greek gematria (the numerology of adding together numbers corresponding to the letters of a word). This is a simplified chart to enable English speakers to work out famous historical examples such as NERON KAISAR, or to take a stab at finding a number corresponding to their own names etc., but does not show the full linguistic and other complexities of the two systems.

When trying to transcribe English words into ancient Hebrew spelling, note that the letter י can be used to write long/diphthongal e vowels, while ה can be used to write a vowels or short e vowels at the end of a word. Other a and e vowels were not written with letters in ancient Hebrew. One could use א to represent a vowels, but this is more of an Aramaic or modern Hebrew spelling convention, rather than real ancient Hebrew. In modern Hebrew spelling, a prime mark can be used after certain letters to indicate sound variants, so that ´ג can be used to write j as in "judge", ´צ to write ch as in "church" etc. Also, א can be used at the beginning of a word to indicate that the word begins with a vowel. When a sound value is mentioned as occurring "after [a] vowel", this means except when the consonant is doubled.

Ancient Greek ζ was often pronounced zd or dz.
