Big Hole National Battlefield Site. The gulch in the siege area, called Battle Gulch, is a topographic feature that allowed Nez Perce warriors lines of fire as well as a route of approach to the besieged army soldiers at close range. Vegetation character varies by topography across the site, with the lodgepole pine forest growing on the slopes.
