Bears for Battleships: twelve cub mascots figure in big parade at Seattle. Seattle, Washington, May 26. Rear Admiral Charles S. Sperry, commanding the Atlantic fleet, today landed an armed force of 3,000 men, who made a Seattle holiday by parading through the streets of the city. They were accompanied by a land force of coast artillery and infantry from Fort Lawton, Worden, Casey and Flagler, and local militia and civic societies. An amusing diversion was made in the middle of the procession by the appearance of twelve bear cubs, brought from the city of Aberdeen to be presented as mascots to the battleships. Each was led by a prominent citizen of Aberdeen and the antics of the cubs caused much laughter. Before the reviewing stand was reached the little fellows looked too tired to walk and the men carried them. (Source: New York Times, May 27, 1908, p. 1)
