Title |
Bell |
||
Description |
English: A cast spherical 'rumbler' bell, made of copper alloy. These bells were worn by both sheep and horses from the 17th to 19th centuries. The bell has a square suspension loop and is divided into two hemispheres. The top hemisphere has two sound holes cut into it. The bottom hemisphere also has two sound holes, connected by a slit. Both hemispheres are decorated with a grooved sunburst design. The bottom hemisphere is also decorated with a shield-shaped design, set against the slot on the base of the bell. Within this shield there is a grooved letter 'P'.
Parallels for this type of bell can be seen in Bailey, 1999, pp40, fig. 18 and 20 and Bailey, 2000, pp67, fig. 9). |
