Notes Sam Browne belt, Captain, NZ Ordnance - Captain Alfred William Baldwin, post-WW1 Alfred William Baldwin enlisted in 1887 with the 2nd Essex Regiment, UK. He served 5 years in England, and 19yrs in India Burma and Burma. After migrating to New Zealand he joined the NZ Ordnance and served between1912-27. Sam Browne belts are combination pistol or sword belts with a shoulder strap and D-rings and were intended to take some of the weight of the sword. They were named after General Sir Sam Browne (1849-1898) of the British Army in India. The were first used in India, where Browne was stationed, circa 1860.
