Notes Leather belt with collection of badges, souvenirs of Gallipoli Campaign, belonged to 12-12 Pte Maurice Wynne Allom, Auckland Infantry Regiment, 1NZEF, WW1 The belt, a standard brown leather belt, is decorated with a collection of badges of various units that took part in the Gallipoli campaign and includes a Turkish button and badge. Maurice Allom of Mt Eden Rd, Auckland, born 1886, volunteered at the outbreak of war and served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, service number 12-12. leaving New Zealand on the Waimana in October 1914 as part of the Main Body, and saw service in the Suez Canal action in February 1915 (Ismailia) and then served on Gallipoli, landing with the Auckland Regiment on 25 April, and serving through until June 1915 when he was wounded when a gun blew up alongside him causing a total loss of hearing. This was probably at the Daisy Patch (on 8 May) where several of his friends were killed. He was reported wounded on 20 May, and returned to Egypt for hospitalisation in July 1915. While in Egypt Private Allom contracted dysentery (the ‘Nile Bug’), but also worked at the NZ Staff HQ on base duties (as confidential secretary to Colonel Saunders) until the end of March 1916 and was then evacuated back to New Zealand on the hospital ship Maheno.
