Title |
Belt plate (obverse) |
||
Description |
English: An Anglo-Saxon belt-plate, made of copper-alloy with decorative gilding. The plate belt is cast and rectangular in outline. In the centre (on the obverse surface) there is a raised copper-alloy setting, which frames the decorative area in the middle of the plate. This area encloses a ring and dot design, with two rings arranged concentrically around one dot. This area has been gilded. On the reverse there are two cast fixing studs. Each stud is positioned in the middle of the plate, on either end, on the horizontal axis. One of the studs has been broken, leaving only a small stump. The other appears to be intact (measuring 5.4mm in length). Both studs are well worn. The belt plate has been worn and is coated in a some sort of lacquer which makes it difficult to see the colour of the metal. Traces of gilding also survive on the two horizontal edges of the plate. These types of belt plate are entirely Anglo-Saxon in appearance and sixth-century in date. Two parallels can be seen in MacGregor and Bolick, 1993, pp210-1, Fig. 36-1 and 36.2. |
