Notes New Testament given to 38337 Private Percy Broady, 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment, on 6 February 1917 by his mother, just before his departure overseas, WW1. Handwritten in ink on first page- "To Percy from Mother with best love. Jan 6th 1917" Twenty year old Percy Broady was farming at Sulphur Beach, Northcote, Auckland when he enlisted with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 17 October 1916 (service no 38337). He stated his religious profession to be Presbyterian. Following his enlistment he was posted to the 22nd Reinforcements, A Coy, and four months later, on 16 February 1917, left New Zealand to join the 2nd Auckland Coy, 4th Reserve Battalion at Sling Camp in England on 2 May. A month later Private Broady proceeded overseas, joining the 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment at Rouen on 26 June 1917. According to his family Percy Broady served with the 15 North Auckland Company of the regiment. He was with the Regiment during Passchendaele then, on 20 November 1917, was detached to No 1 Coy, N.Z.M.G.C. (NZ Machine Gun Corps). He rejoined the Battalion on 24 March 1918, from the NZ Field Ambulance. According to his family he was wounded at Passchendaele, but this is not indicated on his Service Record. Percy Broady had two further admissions to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance in May and June 1918 for approximately 1 week on each occasion, but was seriously wounded (left buttock) circa 31 August 1918 and required hospitalisation. He was admitted initially to the General Hospital Rouen on 1 September 1918; he was then transferred to London, c10 September, and then to Hornchurch (18 September to 9 November 1918) and Codford (25 November 1918 to - ). Early the following year Private Broady returned home, embarking from the UK aboard 'Port of Melbourne' on 25 January 1919. Following his return to New Zealand Percy Broady was discharged as "no longer physically fit for war service on account of wounds received in action".
