Jock Sutherland met Helen Clifford while serving with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion during WW1. They married at Bridgewater, Somerset on 1 January 1919. The Bible was a wedding gift from Helen's employer. John Sutherland, also known as Jock, was born in Dunedin on November 26, 1886, to David and Margaret Sutherland (nee Mitchell) and was living at Waimate when he enlisted as a private with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion soon after the outbreak of war. He left New Zealand on 6 October 1914 with the Main Body. By the end of the war Jock Sutherland had attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, and he married Helen Clifford, before his return to New Zealand. His son, Ross St Clair Sutherland served during WW2.
