Birth of Adonis // Parigi, Bibliothèque Nationale, manoscritto di una traduzione francese delle Metamorfosi di Ovidio, Ms. français 137 Annotazioni redazionali: Nel Manoscritto français 137, contenente una traduzione in francese delle Metamorfosi di Ovidio, è conservata una miniatura dedicata al mito di Mirra. Viene rappresentato un unico momento: la nascita di Adone dal tronco dell’albero. La sventurata fanciulla è già stata trasformata nell’albero che porta il suo stesso nome e, essendo incinta, una fessura lungo il tronco permette al bambino di nascere. Il piccolo Adone è accolto dalle ninfe che assistono alla scena meravigliate. Sulla destra è presente, separata dalle altre figure, una quarta donna che si distingue dalle altre in quanto è alata, potrebbe in realtà trattarsi della dea Lucina, divinità che presiede alle nascite, infatti Ovidio nelle Metamorfosi ci narra dell’intervento tempestivo della dea, giunta ad aiutare Mirra. In questo manoscritto medievale l’intervento di Lucina diventa ancora più prodigioso, la dea è rappresentata con le ali dorate che sottolineano la natura divina e miracolosa dell’evento; Mirra ha infatti perso totalmente le sembianze di essere umano, nonostante ciò riesce a partorire Adone, bambino vivo e bellissimo. Tutte le cinque donne rappresentate sono vestite con abiti e copricapo medievali. In questa illustrazione non c’è alcun riferimento al momento della trasformazione di Mirra in albero, né al peccato compiuto dalla fanciulla unitasi a suo padre incestuosamente e con l’inganno, il mito viene purificato dei suoi elementi più meschini e vergognosi, preferendo rappresentare un evento tanto miracoloso quanto la nascita di un bambino bellissimo dal tronco di un albero.
