Description

St Andrew's Church, Blickling, Norfolk, monumental brass of Anne Boleyn (1476-1479) who died aged 3, a daughter of Sir w:William Boleyn (1451–1505) of Blickling Hall, by his wife Lady Margaret Butler (1454–1539), a daughter and co-heiress of w:Thomas Butler, 7th Earl of Ormond. She was the aunt of Queen Anne Boleyn (c.1501-1536) (daughter of Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire (c.1477-1539)) the second wife of King Henry VIII. Arms: Argent, a chevron gules between three bull's heads afrontée sable (Boleyn ancient) quartering Or, a chief indented azure (Butler, being arms of Walter (Butler (ancient)) adopted at the start of the age of heraldry by w:Theobald Walter, 1st Chief Butler of Ireland (fl.1194). These arms are borne in the first quarter of the arms of the Butler family, Marquess of Ormonde (the "cup" arms of Butler are borne in the 2nd) reflecting that family's descent in the male line from Theobald Walter. (Debrett's Peerage, 1968, p.864). Later adopted as "modern arms" by Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire and Ormond (whose maternal grandfather was Thomas Butler, 7th Earl of Ormonde) in lieu of his paternal arms). See image with flash[1]. Inscribed in Latin (Source: Francis Blomefield, 'Hundred of South Erpingham: Blickling', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 6 (London, 1807), pp. 381-409[2]):

Which may be translated: "Here lies Ann Boleyn, daughter of William Boleyn, Esquire, of her age of three years eleven months and thirteen days, who died on the last day of the month of October in the year of our Lord 1479, on the soul of whom may God look with favour, Amen".
