Description

St Andrew's Church, Blickling, Norfolk, monument to Elizabeth Gurdon (1565-1582) who died aged 17. Erected by Sir Edward Clere (1536-1606), MP, of Blickling Hall. She died of a cold while visiting Sir Edward Clere at Blickling (Source: http://www.northernvicar.co.uk/2018/07/29/blickling-norfolk-st-andrew/). Sir Edward Clere was a great-nephew of Sir James Boleyn, from whom in 1561 he inherited Blickling, which he made his chief seat. Clere was one of the greatest landowners in Norfolk, appearing in 1588 on Lord Burghley’s list of ‘knights of great possessions’ able to support a peerage. He was a second cousin to the Queen and to Lord Hunsdon, and brother-in-law to Walter Haddon, the master of requests. (Source: CLERE, Edward (1536-1606), of Blickling, Norf. Published in The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1558-1603, ed. P.W. Hasler, 1981[1]). Inscribed in Latin: Elizabeth quae habuit patrem Johan(n)em Gurdon de Assingtonque matrem unica prolem Bramptoni de Letton. In memory to her Sir Edward Clere placed it".
