Title
Bodkin
Description
English: An incomplete silver bodkin, the terminal of the rectangular eyelet at the broad end is now missing due to old breaks. This bodkin is rectangular in shape and tapers towards a pointed terminal end; the lower third is bent backwards at right angles to the rest of it. Below the incomplete eyelet on both faces there is engraved decoration. This consists of a probable rose between an upper and a lower pair of transverse grooves and beneath this is a rectangular border which tapers to a point and has within it two zigzags with diagonal and transverse lines within and between them. On the front face there is also the engraved letters ‘M A’ these are most likely to be the owner’s initials.

This bodkin is similar to other circa 17th century examples published in various Treasure Annual Reports, for example Treasure Annual Report 2002, 102-103, no 127-129.

Dimensions: 76mm in length as bent, (circa 123mm in length if straightened), 5mm in width and c3mm in thickness.

Disposition: To be confirmed
The precious metal content of this bodkin fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %.
