Summary[edit]

[Manuscript of Latin panegyrics to Cardinal Wolsey]
Title
[Manuscript of Latin panegyrics to Cardinal Wolsey]
Description
The earliest English gold-tooled binding? English, c. 1519. Brown calfskin, giltstamped with blocks showing Tudor badges and St George: the dedication copy of a manuscript of Latin panegyrics to Cardinal Wolsey in prose and verse, composed by the grammarian and schoolmaster Robert Whittington (c. 1480– 1553?) for presentation to the Cardinal, whose patronage he sought. Whittington's publication of the same texts as part of his Opusculum (London, April 1519) indicates the date, which makes this probably the earliest English gold-tooled binding.
