[edit]DescriptionBody Block 03 - Payne Avenue - Cleveland (34685673092).jpg |
Detail of the Body Block on Payne Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. Built for wallpaper businessman Charles Body in 1892, it was designed in the Queen Anne style by George Smith of the local architectural firm of Schultz and Stein. Like his much more famous Cleveland Arcade downtown, the Body Block features a skylight interior arcade onto which all the apartments look down. Once one of the most fashionable apartment blocks in Cleveland, it fell onto hard times and then was all but abandoned in the 1970s and 1980s. By the early 1990s, its only residents were the homeless and drug dealers. From 1994 to 1996, it underwent a massive renovation into low-income housing. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1998. |
