Title |
Bone probable knife scale |
||
Description |
English: A bone scale probably from a knife and probably post medieval in date. The scale is sub-rectangular, narrower at one end than at the other. It has bevelled edges and is decorated with incised diagonal lines that run across the face and the sides. No mounting points or other evidence of attachment are visible and there is no ferrous corrosion, suggesting it was never attached to an iron blade. It has a length of 76.44mm, width 14.68mm, thickness 4.61mm, weight 7.61g. Medieval knives can be seen in Cowgill, de Neergaard and Griffiths (1987) "Knives and scabbards. Medieval Finds from excavations in London" but most of these have round sectioned handles, so a late post medieval date is suggested. A knife handle with some similarities can be seen on page 93 of Egan (2005) "Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition". |
