Title |
book clasp (front) |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy book clasp with an expanded outer edge that terminates in two points and a tripartite inner edge that has broken so that the central projection no longer extends into a hook. The hook would have attached to a corresponding eye in the hasp which would have been riveted to a leather bound book, in order to keep the book closed and the pages intact. On either side of the broken hook are two square apertures, which might have formed openwork decoration, or perhaps been used as attachment holes. The upper face of the clasp is incised with three lozenges that have cross-hatching within them.
Bailey (1992) illustrates a similar clasp decorated with incised lozenges on page 74, No.18, which is dated from the late 16th to the early 18th century. |
