Title |
Bow Brooch |
||
Description |
English: Roman bow brooch missing the catch plate and pin. The brooch resembles the Trumpet type, but has a prominent recess between the head and the spring mechanism. The wings do not project beyond the narrow spring mechanism. The spring is secured by being looped around the underside of the mechanism. This brooch type is closest to the ‘Kraftig Profilierte (Strong profiled) brooches described by Hattatt (1985) as having a mainly European distribution and being found mostly on military sites from the 1st century AD.
The head of the brooch is rounded and slightly expanded, resembling the Trumpet brooch. The bow is ‘V’ shaped in profile below the head with a single chevron decoration near the head of the bow. There is a prominent flat circular moulding above a curving moulding. The bow is circular in section at this point, where it has broken in antiquity. |
