Title
Bow brooch (front)
Description
English: Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Polden Hill type, probably of 1st Century AD date. The brooch has a spring mechanism, which is still present, and is of the ‘Polden Hill lug type’ (Hattatt 1987, p6), with a small protruding perforated lug at the head of the brooch to secure the chord. The axis bar is still present and appears to be made of copper alloy. The wings are decorated with wide incised vertical grooves, possibly imitating the spring mechanism. The bow is of D-shaped cross section with a central low rib or crest coming off the perforated lug. The catch-plate has a rounded triangular perforation, and an incised line before the hook. The slight foot is undefined and oval in shape. The brooch is very well preserved and has evidence f silvering or tinning on the surface.
