| Description |
Sir William Strickland was grandson of the original William Strickland who founded the family fortunes and bought the first turkeys back from America. Sir William Strickland was 1st Baronet and died in 1673, and was a leading supporter of the parliamentarian cause in the civil war. He was created a baronet in 1641, and sat in the long Parliament and was eventually promoted by Cromwell to his house of peers. He was married twice, firstly to Margaret Cholmley of Whitby, by whom he had four daughters, and secondly to Frances Finch who gave him Thomas his successor. |
