[edit]DescriptionBramo 323P engine from Do17Z-2 -5K+AR- (32134918197).jpg |
The Bramo 323 Fafnir is a German nine-cylinder radial engine of which 5,500 were built for use in Dornier Do17, Focke-Wulf Fw200, Henschel Hs126 and Blohm & Voss Bv222 aircraft. This example is from Do17Z-2 c/n 1160, coded 5K+AR, operated by 7 Staffel, III Gruppe, Kampfgeschwader 3 (KG 3). On 26th August 1940 it was on a raid targeting RAF Debden & RAF Hornchurch when it was shot down by a Boulton Paul Defiant from 264sqn RAF. The Dornier crash landed on the Goodwin Sands. While two of the crew died, the other two including the pilot were taken prisoner. The inverted wreck was located in 2008, identified during further surveys in 2010 and finally raised on 10th June 2013, then moving to Cosford. Efforts since then have concentrated on conserving the airframe and this has included several years in a hydration tunnel being sprayed it with citric acid to “neutralise impurities”. This unrestored engine and propeller have recently gone on display in the ‘War in the Air’ hangar. RAF Museum, Cosford, Shropshire, UK. 9th June 2018 |
