Rev. Branford Clarke, 62, Ex-Boro Pastor, Artist. The Rev. Branford Clarke, pastor of the Pillar of Fire Church, 123 Sterling Place, and one of the leading ministers of the denomination, died yesterday in his home at Zarephath, New Jersey. He was 62. Mr. Clarke, poet and artist as well as missionary preacher, sometime ago published a volume, "Poems and Pictures by Preacher." which has had an extensive circulation. He born in Erith, Kent, England, Mina received his early art training in the Birbeck Institute of London. In 1911 he heard a Pillar of Fire preacher and a year later decided to join the ministry. He came to the United States in 1913 and studied for the ministry in the national headquarters of the Pillar of Fire Church in Zarephath. While there he applied himself also to verse writing and art work. In the early 1920s he was pointed pastor of the Brooklyn church. There he introduced an innovation in pulpit practice by illustrating his sermons with oil paintings executed by himself. He preached on the street and visited thousands of homes and business places in Greater New York. After leaving the Brooklyn church Mr. Clarke toured a number of Eastern States as an evangelist. In the meantime he drew thousands of cartoons and other illustrations for the publications and books of the Pillar of Fire Church. He also preached extensively over the church's radio, Station WAWZ, at Zarephath. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow in the Pillar of Fire Auditorium in Zarephath. Bishop Arthur K. While will officiate. Surviving are his widow. Mrs. Esther Borough Clarke; son, Branford Clarke Jr. of San Diego and four sisters in London.
