Summary[edit]
DescriptionBridge Grammene (16404670394).jpg |
Seen from the cycling & walking path on the iron railway bridge over the river Leie in Grammene, with St. John the Baptist Church in the background. It is a Vierendeel bridge (to designer Arthur Vierendeel). Built in 1922 from riveted individual profiles. Typical for Vierendeel Bridges is the lack of diagonal connections between the vertical posts. During World War II the bridge was destroyed and rebuilt twice. After peoples protest in 1992 the railway company decided it would not be replaced. Refurbished in 1992 and 2014. |
