English: With billowing flags and traditionally dressed local riders behind them and the panoramic of the majestic Atlas Mountains in the foreground, it was a supremely glorious setting for the 350 guests gathered at Jnan Amar Polo Club to enjoy the first ever BPD Brompton Cycle Polo Exhibition Match.
The encounter between Hackett London British Exiles and an Eton College hijacked Rest of the World side kicked-off an afternoon of competition at the inaugural BPD Morocco on Saturday 19th April. After a frenzied and hugely entertaining Le Mans start to the first chukka, His Excellency Mr Clive Alderton LVO (British Ambassador to Morocco) accompanied Eve Branson to throw the ball in for the second & final chukka. The Brompton is the polo pony of the bicycle world. Nippy in the dash, highly responsive and with the requirement for rider & mount to have a sound mutual understanding of one another. With 2 minutes remaining, the score was 3 apiece. At this point, the "horsepower" of the Eton side began to wane and the youth of British Exiles took advantage as their Union Jack Bromptons ran rings around their green & red liveried opposition. The final score for The Hackett Cup ran out 5-3 in favour of The British Exiles. Brompton's role in the event was not finished, as one of the bikes was auctioned off at The Gala Dinner later that evening as part of a fundraising effort at La Mamounia that raised over $185,000USD for The Eve Branson Foundation. Billed as having had one "careful" owner, the Brompton in question was won by the best female polo player in the world, 4-goaler Nina Clarkin. Next stop in the tour will be another new leg. The first BPD USA will be held at Will Rogers Polo Club in Los Angeles on Saturday 31st May... |
