Description

Douglas-Charles Airport, Dominica, 20 September 2017.

The Caribbean island of Dominica was devasted by the category 5 Hurricane Maria on Sept 19th, and the Prime Minister of the country, Roosevelt Skerrit, requested emergency international assistance. The UK already had military aircraft in the region responding to the damaged caused by Hurricane Irma.

A Chinook helicopter from 27 Squadron RAF was tasked to take a needs assessment team to the island on 20 September, made up of expert Royal Engineers, humanitarian experts from the Department for International Development, the United Nations, Map Action and the Caribbean Disasters & Emergencies Management Agency (CDEMA). The team was the first international assistance mission to arrive on the island after the hurricane.
