Fotografia Bronisława Wilkoszewskiego z albumu „Widoki m. Łodzi” przedstawiająca kościół rzymskokatolicki Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Marii Panny na Starym Mieście (widok od strony południowej). Przed 1888 rokiem na Placu Kościelnym stał drewniany kościół parafialny pod tym samym wezwaniem. Rozebrany i przeniesiony w 1888 roku na ul. Ogrodową 22, gdzie został poświęcony jako kościół pw. św. Józefa Oblubieńca Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Decyzję o budowie nowej świątyni podjęto w latach 80. XIX wieku, a projekt w stylu gotyku wiślano-bałtyckiego wykonał warszawski architekt Konstanty Wojciechowski. Budowa rozpoczęła się w 1888 roku, by już w dwa lata później świątynia była gotowa w stanie surowym. Wykończenia trwały do 1897 roku i dopiero wówczas dokonano jej konsekracji. Jak w przypadku świątyń innych wyznań i tu w komitecie budowy zasiadali miejscowi przemysłowcy różnych wyznań m.in.: Juliusz Kunitzer, rodzina Scheiblerów oraz Izrael Kalmanowicz Poznański. |
