Title
Bronze Age class 5 flat axe (Arreton phase)
Description
English: Bronze Age cast copper alloy class 5 flat axe, Arreton phase, 1700-1500BC. Incomplete - much of the original surface has flaked off and the butt end, blade end and three flanges are all damaged. Although the butt end is damaged it appears to have been straight. Small flanges (height of only complete flange 3mm) on either side of the septum. No stop or nick. The sides are gently curved - there are no flange facets. One blade tip damaged, the other is splayed but there is no hollow. The cutting edge is missing. Three diagonal striations in the same direction visible on what remains of the original surface of the blade on one side. No casting lines. Pitted and flaked; dark brown patina where the original surface survives; brown exposed surface; one area of green corrosion on a blade tip. Length 87.6mm, width across butt end 18.2mm, width across centre (at highest point of flanges) 21.6mm, width across blade end (incomplete) 49.5mm, max thickness (across flanges) 14.1mm, height of complete flange 3mm, weight 92.52g.
