Title
Bronze Age flat axe (face 1, profile 1, face 2, profile 2).
Description
English: Small cast copper-alloy flat axe. Early Bronze-Age (2150BC-1500BC). Length: 71mm; width: 32mm; thickness: 4mm; mass: 39.9g. The axe has a rounded butt, concave sides, and a wide convex cutting edge. The cutting edge is slightly bevelled with angled striations visible on both faces (from sharpening?). The axe is decorated with lines of punched grooves, forming disarticulated zig-zag patterns on both faces: / \ / \ / \. The axe has a well-developed brown patina although some pitting is visible. There is a concave fracture mark adjoining one side near to the cutting edge on one face. This is also patinated and not recent. Based on form, the flat axe is probably type Migdale, although the decoration is uncommon for this type (see Schmidt and Burgess, 1981, p. 44-5). There is little independent evidence for the dating of decorated Migdale axes, but it may be a late development of the type (ibid. p. 58). The axe is unusually small.
