Title
Bronze Age knife
Description
English: Copper-alloy leaf-shaped and pointed knife/razor with tang. The blade has a slight, broad, flattish midrib, and there is extensive surface pocking due to invasive corrosion; only c. 50% of the original surface of the blade survives. The tang is rectangular in section; it is bent before what appears to be a fairly fresh break. The bend shows no sign of stress to the metal, but as corrosion has removed the surface anyway this may not be diagnostic of a bend in antiquity. Dark green-brown patina. This object has been seen briefly by Stuart Needham of the British Museum and identified as a knife/razor, as it is too thin to serve as a leaf-shaped arrowhead. The actual function of such objects is still unclear. Smaller than a similar example (bent in a different plane) from near Bewdley, Worcs. (P. J. Watson, 'Two recent Bronze Age finds from Worcestershire', Trans. Worcs. Archaeol. Soc. 3rd ser. 11 (1988), 23-5; P. J. Watson, Catalogue of British and European Prehistoric Metalwork in Birmingham City Museums, BAR 233 (1993), 10 and fig. 76). Length as bent 77 mm, maximum width 20 mm. Thickness at centre of blade 2 mm, at junction with tang 3 mm. Weight 14.06g.
