Description |
English: Plant with green heart-shaped leaves Buffalo gourd is often called Coyote-Melon and has heart-shaped leaves, grayish-green above and white below, with finely toothed edges. The leaves are roughly textured and foul smelling. The fruit is gourd-like resembling a little round watermelon, smooth with green and white stripes turning yellow when ripe. The broad trumpet-shaped flower is yellow or orange with petals that flare widely into five pointed wrinkled lobes. American Indians have used this plant for 9,000 years, extracting oil for cooking from the edible seeds or roasting and slating them to make the seeds into mush. The dried fruit was picked to make gourd rattles used during ceremonies. Pioneers used the crushed root as a cleansing agent in washing clothes. The crushed leaves are an effective insecticide. |
