For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme. Zentralbild Biscan Qu 7.1.1964 Anläßlich des Jahrestages der Zerstörung Magdeburgs: Am 16. Januar 1945, enige Tage vor Kriegsende, erfolgte der große angloamerikanische Bombenangriff, dem fast die gesamte Innenstadt Magdeburgs zum Opfer fiel. 800 Bomber luden 1000 Luftminen, 12000 Sprengbomben und 200000 Brandbomben über derStadt ab. Magdeburg hatte nach jener grauenvollen Nacht 16000 Tote, 24648 Verwundete und 244560 Obdachlose zu beklagen - fast das ganze Stadtzentrum lag in Trümmern.- Der Wiederaufbau der zerstörten Elbestadt, für den die regierung der DDR alljährlich viele Millionen DM zur Verfügung stellt, hat besonders in der letzten Zeit große Fortschritte gemacht. UBz: Blick auf die Katherinen-Kirche, eine der 15 Kirchen, die am 16. Januar 1945 zerstört bzw. schwer beschädigt wurden. In der Kirche befand sich in den ersten Jahen nach dem Kriege einer der großen trümmerberge (unten). Heute erheben sich dort helle Wohnblöcke (oben), weitere sind noch in Bau. |
