bust vessel mount side |

Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy furniture or vessel mount dating to the Early Roman period. The front of the mount shows moulded features of the face, which is very worn obscuring details of the nose and mouth. The body is draped. The hair appears tied back, although not tightly, and is drawn up at the top of the head, creating two top knots. These are broken and worn, and were at first thought to be a possible broken suspension loop, although this is now considered unlikely. The reverse of the shoulders is flat, as is a central vertical section of the head.
The object is 36mm long. The shoulders are 25.5mm wide. The head is 14mm wide and 14mm thick. This figurine is probably of the godess Diana, whose hair is frequently, but not always, arranged by being drawn up into two top knots. This mount does appears to have the hair drawn up, but does not have an arrow or quiver with which Diana is also often associated. Depictions of Diana are not very common finds in Britain, Diana was not one of the most popular female deities in Roman Britain. She combined the functions of a woodland and fertility goddess but she is mostly represented in her capacity of a goddess of hunting. In 1992, there were four known bronze figurines from Britain from Bassingbourn (Cambs.), Cirencester (Gloucs.), Wroxeter (Shrops.) and Exeter (Devon). There is an example of a Diana figurine recorded by PAS from Bucks (BUC-D17112).
