Object history The bookplates of George Fleming and Robin de Beaumont are on the upper pastedown.
Inscriptions The upper endpaper recto has: ‘Frances [?] Payne with Mary’s best love.’ Robin de Beaumont’s notes are on the upper endpaper verso.
Notes The text is sewn on three sawn cords. The binding is of yellow paper over boards. Yellow endpapers and pastedowns. The lower cover lists publisher’s titles. The imprint at the tail is of Edmund Evans, Racquet Court, Fleet Street. The upper cover shows an Indian/ native family on a hill top, looking out over a sea bay, in which two sailing ships are moored. A longboat is being rowed ashore. A purple border surrounds this scene. The words: “Historical Tales” are printed near the head. Flags, arms, and a sword are within the purple border. At the base: “/ With 20 pictures/ London: Geo Routledge & Co./” are printed. Another copy (probable) is BL shelfmark 1608/2007. This book acquired with the generous assistance of the British Library Collections Trust.
