Title
C19 Chinese MS moxibustion point chart: Pigen
Description

Acu-moxa point chart, showing thepigenpoint, fromChuanwu lingji lu(Record of Sovereign Teachings), by Zhang Youheng, a treatise on acu-moxa in two volumes. This work survives only in a manuscript draft, completed in 1869 (8th year of the Tongzhi reign period of the Qing dynasty). It is illustrated with 84 charts, finely executed in colour. The text states: Thepigenpoint is located below the 12th vertebra, 3.5cunto either side (1cun[Chinese/proportional inch] = c. 3 cm). Moxibustion with 7 moxa cones at this point can be used to treat lumps in the abdomen (pikuai) that have built up over several years. Moxibustion is carried out on the leftpigenpoint if the lump is located to the left, on the rightpigenpoint if it is located to the right, or on both both points if there are lumps on both sides.
