Nederlands: Binnen de categorie voorouderbeelden kennen de Bembe een groep moeder-en-kindbeeldjes, waarbij de moeder het kind zoogt of op de rug draagt. Dit type beelden symboliseert met name de voorouders, die verbonden zijn met de vruchtbaarheidscultus. Aan de hand van de littekentatoeages kan de afgebeelde voorouder worden geïdentificeerd, evenals haar positie binnen de maatschappij (Lehuard 1989: 329).
In de holte op de plaats van de anus bevindt zich een hoeveelheid krachtmateriaal. Dit geeft het beeld een spirituele en magische kracht, 'ngolo' genoemd. De eigenaar roept deze kracht aan voor bescherming tegen rampen en tegenspoed, waaronder vruchtbaarheidsproblemen. De lege en witte ogen van een biteke zouden er op wijzen dat het beeld met ngolo is gevuld (Grootaers, Jan-Lodewijk en I. Eisenburger 2002: 516) Lehuard (1989: 327) heeft vastgesteld dat de meeste kunst van de Bemba afkomstig is uit Mouyondzi of de onmiddellijke omgeving, de plaats die door de Bemba als regionale hoofdstad wordt beschouwd. |
