Title
Candle holder socket
Description
English: A incomplete probable candlestick. Only the copper-alloy socket of this candlestick survives. It is hollow and cylindrical in shape, measuring 37.8mm in height, with a rim diameter of 19.2mm. The base of the socket is waisted before terminating in a circular flat disc, 10.3mm in diameter. There is corroded iron within the base of the socket, this may be the corroded remains of an iron spike onto which a wax candle could have been puched to allow it to be held securly within the socket. This corroded iron passes through a hole in the underside of the flat circular disc of the socket, perhaps there was originally an iron arm, terminating in the spike inside the socket, which projected from the socket and formed the stem of this candle holder.

This candlestick socket is most likely to be late medieval or post medieval in date.
